Insight Help Center
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
School leaders should foster fair, inclusive communities for staff and students with diverse backgrounds. In this Insight survey domain, teachers assess whether promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion is a clear and broadly shared priority at their school, and whether the school’s talent management practices and overall culture advance that priority.
Recommendations
Based on our extensive experience, TNTP recommends the following as evidence-based practices for this domain:
- Create a district equity statement and a data-informed and mission-aligned DEI strategy aimed at deepening awareness of structural inequity as detailed in The Opportunity Myth, expanding internal capacity to view work through an equity lens, strengthening inclusive leadership practices, and establishing systems and structures to support ongoing equity work.
- Create a concrete, transparent, and measurable district equity plan that includes the voices of students, staff, families, and community members of all cultures and perspectives to ensure all stakeholders are provided an environment and resources necessary for students to reach their greatest potential.
- Conduct an equity audit to identify strengths, opportunities and areas for growth in school and district-level decisions—from the diversity of staff at all levels to which students are enrolled in honors courses—that give some groups greater access than others to key resources as identified in The Opportunity Myth.
- Build an inclusive and equitable environment by providing foundational learning opportunities and ongoing conversation that directly respond to the realities of identity, bias, and institutional inequities across all leadership levels.
