Career Progression

One of the keys to sustaining a successful school is retaining effective teachers, developing future school leaders, and extending the influence of strong teachers in middle leadership positions. This Insight survey domain captures teachers’ perceptions of their future career options within the school and organization.

Recommendations

Based on our extensive experience, TNTP recommends the following as evidence-based practices for this domain:

  • Engage stakeholders such as teachers, principals, and central office staff in the design and implementation process of a career pathway.
  • Ensure that there is a rigorous, equitable, and normed selection process in place that includes collecting multiple pieces of evidence of a teacher’s skills.
  • Monitor data on which teachers are applying to and moving into leadership positions to help ensure an equitable selection process that produces teacher-leaders representative of the overall teaching staff.
  • Allow for teacher-leaders to have sufficient time during the workday to fulfill their responsibilities.
  • Develop and support teacher-leaders, including both formal PD/training and one-on-one support and coaching.
