Five Lessons from TNTP’s Futures Design Studio

In May 2025, TNTP launched the Futures Design Studio to explore new approaches to TNTP’s work to advance economic and social mobility for young people. 

We did so at a moment when many of the challenges facing students have become more complex. Despite decades of effort, too many young people still leave school without a reliable pathway to opportunity. And every day, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, changing workforce expectations, and evolving community needs continue to reshape the world students are preparing to enter.  

This piece is for anyone thinking seriously about what comes next for learners. That includes districts and state leaders navigating AI and workforce readiness in their schools, peer organizations building similar capacities, and funders weighing this kind of investment. 

We believe this moment calls for more than incremental improvement. Our team investigates new ways of learning, designing, and building alongside the people most affected by these changes. That’s why we chose the name Futures Design Studio. 

  • Futures reflects our belief that the future is something to shape, not predict. Through foresight and sensemaking practices, we look for signals of change in the present and explore how today’s decisions may influence opportunities for students tomorrow. 
  • Design reflects our commitment to starting with people. We anchor in the experiences of students, families, educators, and communities, and work to understand the systems surrounding us, resisting the urge to jump straight to solutions. 
  • Studio reflects the reality that creating something new is often messy. Like artists, we move between exploration and refinement, testing ideas, learning from failure, and iterating toward stronger possibilities. 

Over the past year, we’ve piloted new approaches to future-ready skills, AI fluency, and organizational innovation. We’ve worked closely with partners inside and outside of TNTP, tested new ideas, and learned a great deal along the way. Here are five lessons that continue to shape our work.

1. Ground in the student experience.

We begin every project with a simple question: What do we want to be true for students?  

Building on TNTP’s research in The Widget Effect (2009), we view students as worldbuilders, job creators, and community leaders—not widgets filling roles in an economy. Keeping that perspective front and center helps us navigate uncertainty and make better decisions about where to invest our energy. 

For example, our work on AI fluency is grounded in the belief that while technology may change many aspects of teaching and learning, it won’t replace the importance of relationships, critical thinking, creativity, and human connection. Those capacities remain central to how people access opportunity. Starting from that assumption helped us get clearer about what AI may change and what it likely will not. 

2. Embrace uncertainty.

Creating something new requires becoming comfortable with not knowing. 

Foresight and sensemaking practices help us build the capacity to recognize emerging signals, make meaning together, and take informed action despite ambiguity. That sounds straightforward. In practice, it is often deeply uncomfortable. 

Our internal AI Makerspace pilot has reinforced that lesson. Staff members entered with varying levels of experience, identified real challenges in their work, and began experimenting with AI-enabled solutions. Progress came from taking the next small step forward rather than waiting for the perfect moment, and many of our participants have remarked on how much more productive that type of learning has felt for them. 

Over the past year, we’ve learned that confidence grows through action. When something feels new, complex, or overwhelming, the goal isn’t to eliminate uncertainty but move through it together.

3. Measure what matters.

Innovation is only meaningful if it leads to better outcomes.  

That’s why the Futures Design Studio works closely with TNTP’s research teams to build learning and evaluation into everything we do. We challenge ourselves to focus on outcomes, not just outputs, and ask difficult questions about what is changing, for whom, and whether those changes move us closer to economic and social mobility for young people. 

As we explore future-ready skills, including durable skills and AI fluency, we’re working to understand not only whether promising approaches work, but why they work and under what conditions. That commitment helps us stay focused on impact rather than activity and ensures that experimentation remains connected to results.

4. If the what isn’t working, focus on the how.

Many organizations devote significant attention to strategy and far less attention to the conditions required to bring that strategy to life.  

Over the past year, we’ve learned that innovation depends as much on how people work together as on the ideas themselves. In moments when progress stalled, the answer was rarely a different strategy. More often, it required a different conversation, a different team rhythm, an incisive question, or a deeper understanding of the challenge we were trying to solve. 

We’ve been inspired by the practices of artists, researchers, social workers, scientists, community organizers, and educators to create space for reflection, collaboration, prototyping, and problem solving. Last year, for example, we adapted elements of The Artist’s Way to help a cross-functional group of TNTP staff reconnect with creative practices and explore how those habits might strengthen their day-to-day work. Instead of trying to find the one right answer, we focus on the conditions that make new answers possible.

5. Celebrate collective wins.

The most important work we’ve done has never belonged to a single person or team. 

While the Futures Design Studio serves as a hub for this work, our progress depends on colleagues across TNTP and partners throughout the field. Our AI Client Services Working Group, for example, brings together staff from multiple divisions and regions to shape emerging service offerings, pressure-test assumptions, and strengthen our thinking before ideas move forward. The same is true of our project work, which regularly draws on expertise from teams across TNTP. The future is a collective project, and building it requires collective effort. 

We’re Just Getting Started. 

The lessons in this piece are early insights, not final conclusions. Over the coming months, we’ll share more from our work on future-ready skills, including durable skills and AI fluency, as well as what we’re learning about edtech integration, AI governance, and what it truly takes to build mobility through strong educational experiences. We’ll also continue exploring the implications of these shifts for schools, systems, and the young people they serve. 

The Futures Design Studio was created to help TNTP explore what’s possible when we bring foresight, design, research, and partnership together in service of economic and social mobility. One year in, we’re more convinced than ever that the future isn’t something that will happen to us, but something we all need to come together to co-create one day at a time—with students front and center.
