Harvard education professor Martin West says we need to reconsider the whole notion of academic recovery. Bouncing back would require students to learn faster than they normally do. “There’s nothing in the science of learning and development that would lead us to expect students to learn at a faster rate after they’ve experienced disruption and setbacks,” he said.

Tequilla Brownie, the CEO of TNTP, a nonprofit based in New York that advocates for improving K-12 education, said after the report’s release that we need to take a more “surgical” approach to helping kids catch up, first using diagnostic tests to figure out where each student’s gaps are and then creating tailored plans to fill them.
