How We Support Tribal Governments

TNTP works alongside tribal governments, schools, and districts to strengthen core instruction, preserve language, and build lasting capacity. Our support is always tailored to tribal priorities—these are a few of the ways we partner with you:

Grade-Level Literacy & Math

Coaching teachers and leaders to deliver rigorous, engaging instruction.

Language Preservation

Supporting sustainable tribal language programs to develop bilingual, biliterate students.

Leadership Development

Strengthening instructional leadership with tribal education leaders and school boards.

Teacher Development & Pathways

Creating pathways to train and certify educators from within tribal communities.

Family & Community Connections

Building roles like parent navigators to deepen partnerships between schools and families.

College & Career Readiness

Connecting strong academics to future opportunities for students.

Our Partnership Approach

Community-Rooted

We listen first and co-design solutions with tribal leaders, educators, and families—never a one-size-fits-all approach.

Trust-Building Discovery

Our discovery phase builds relationships and aligns with your community values and goals.

Capacity Building

We equip educators and leaders with tools and strategies to sustain change beyond our direct engagement.

Student-Centered

We ensure instruction affirms students’ cultures and experiences, fostering strong connections to learning.

Impact in Action

20% Improvement in Foundational Reading Skills in 3 Weeks

During a 2023 Summer Literacy Academy in a New Mexico school district—where 79% of students are tribal citizens—trained 200+ teachers. Students showed a 20% improvement on DIBELS foundational reading assessments.

Doubling Reading Proficiency and Growing Tribal Citizen Leadership

At Isanti Community Schools on the Santee Sioux Reservation, TNTP helped recruit excellent education leaders, including the first Dakota principal and supported  leadership roles that reflect tribal values and traditions. In just 62 instructional days, reading proficiency increased from 14% to 32%.

Building Local Educator Pathways

Through the Indigenous Education Initiative (IEI), TNTP developed alternative licensure routes enabling tribal communities to train and certify effective teachers, including teachers from within the tribal community. Parent navigator roles were created to bridge schools and families, rooted in tribal cultures and Native languages.

Sustaining Tribal Language and Culture

TNTP co-created the Eight Tenets of Indigenous Instructional Scope with tribal elders and educators in New Mexico, guiding rigorous instruction for all students, including instruction that incorporates Native languages and culture.

Strengthening Early Learning and Special Education

Partnering with the Pueblo of Sandia, TNTP  collaborated with early childhood educators in building supportive classrooms that nurture strong relationships and student well-being and enhanced special education staff capacity.

Supporting Technology and Career and Technical Education Pathways.

At Sendero School of Academics and Career Preparation, TNTP helped enhance CTE pathways by aligning rigorous academics with hands-on technical training. We partnered with educators and local industry to design programs that reflect community priorities and workforce needs. As a result, students graduate with industry-recognized credentials, college credit, and clear paths to career and college success.

Remote Learning and Remote Training

TNTP partners with districts across the country to provide meaningful and engaging remote learning and training experiences. Whether focusing on the student experience or adult learning, TNTP leads effective remote learning experiences which empowers us to work with small rural communities throughout the nation.
