Mathematics Acceleration and Coherence Framework

Students experience mathematics as one learning journey, not as separate curricula, interventions, assessments, and digital tools. But when those parts of the system aren’t designed to work together, educators are often left to make the connections themselves.

TNTP’s Mathematics Acceleration and Coherence Framework helps district leaders and educators examine how different parts of their mathematics system work together and where fragmentation may be getting in the way of student learning.

Organized around four domains, the framework helps teams evaluate:

• System-level conditions
• Mathematical progressions and sequencing
• Language, representations, and instructional routines, and;
• Educators’ ability to translate evidence into clear instructional action. 

At the center is a critical question: If we followed a student through every mathematics learning experience, would they experience a connected, challenging, and supportive journey or a collection of disconnected parts?

District teams can use the framework to bring colleagues across departments together, gather evidence, identify where coherence breaks down, and prioritize changes that make the coherent choice easier for educators. It is designed for ongoing reflection and improvement and not as a one-time rating exercise.
