George Battle

VP, General Counsel

As Vice President and General Counsel, George Battle serves as TNTP’s chief legal advisor, overseeing the legal team and providing legal counsel, guidance, and strategic advice in support of our mission. He leads all department functions, including contracts and general business law, compliance, risk management and mitigation, 501(c)(3) governance, intellectual property, and insurance. 

Prior to joining TNTP, George served as Vice Chancellor of Institutional Integrity & Risk Management at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he led a 250-person division, including University Police, Emergency Planning and Management, Environment, Health, & Safety, Ethics & Policy, Conflicts of Interest, Institutional Privacy, and Export Control. 

Previously, George served as General Counsel for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), where he oversaw the legal operation for one of the largest public school districts in the United States, with 140,000 students and 19,000 employees. In this role, he provided advice and counsel to CMS, overall supervision of in-house and outside attorneys representing CMS, and implementation of CMS’s legislative agenda.  

George has served as a member of the North Carolina Board of Community Colleges, as well as the boards of directors for the Mecklenburg County Bar, Mecklenburg County Bar Foundation, McCrorey YMCA, Community Building Initiative, and Carolinas College of Health Sciences. George was designated as a “Rising Star” by SuperLawyers Magazine and received the Vilma D. Leake-Sarah Stevenson International Education Award, given by Growing the Dream for outstanding contributions in the field of education. 

George received his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law. He received his license to practice law after passing the North Carolina bar examination.
