A Flexible, Two-Part Approach to Strengthening Literacy Instruction
Our Science of Reading course blends flexible, self-paced learning with facilitated practice sessions, helping you deepen your knowledge and immediately apply what you learn in your own classroom.
Part 1: Asynchronous Learning Modules
You’ll explore how the brain learns to read and build your instructional expertise through evidence-based strategies you can apply immediately. Interactive, self-paced modules include quick checks, reflection prompts, and practical classroom ideas. This flexible online course fits your schedule—complete it at your own pace on any computer, phone, or tablet with Internet access. You’ll have 13 weeks of access to revisit the materials as needed.
Part 2: Live Facilitated Practice Sessions
Participate in facilitator-led sessions to practice applying evidence-based reading strategies with your own materials and student data. These collaborative sessions help you turn knowledge into stronger instruction. The chart below provides the facilitated practice schedule for the first two cohorts.
Two Tracks for Tailored Reading Instruction
As students progress from the foundational early grades (K-3) to the more advanced upper grades (4-12), their literacy needs evolve significantly. To equip educators with the right tools and strategies for each grade band, we’ve developed two complementary Science of Reading courses: TNTP’s Lower Elementary Science of Reading Course and TNTP’s Upper Elementary and Secondary Science of Reading Course. These targeted professional learning programs ensure that educators can confidently support their students’ literacy growth at every level.
Lower Elementary (K–3)
10 Online Modules | 25–30 Hours
8 Facilitated Practice Session | 12-15 Hours
Strong early literacy skills open the door to lifelong learning. This course equips educators with research and evidence-based strategies to build the foundations of reading for K–3 students—phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary—so every young learner can become a confident reader.
You’ll Learn How To:
- Deliver explicit, systematic foundational skills instruction
- Build fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary using high-quality texts
- Support early readers at all levels with research-based approaches
- Apply evidence-based reading practices using your existing curriculum
Upper Elementary and Secondary (Grades 4–12)
6 Online Modules | 15–20 Hours
6 Facilitated Practice Session | 9 Hours
As students move beyond grade 3, the curriculum shifts from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” This course explores research and evidence-based strategies to support upper elementary and secondary students—especially those with instructional gaps—in developing comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and higher-level literacy skills.
You’ll Learn How to:
- Use evidence-based strategies for older students who need more practice with foundational skills
- Support comprehension of complex texts
- Integrate vocabulary, writing, and discussion for deeper learning
- Apply evidence-based reading practices using your existing curriculum
