Improving Teacher Evaluation Systems
Most teacher evaluation systems fail to give schools meaningful information about teacher performance or provide teachers with the useful feedback they deserve as professionals. TNTP helps districts and state departments of education create rigorous, fair and accurate teacher evaluation and development systems centered on how teachers are performing in their most critical role: advancing student learning. Current partners include the states of Colorado, Illinois, Indiana and Rhode Island and the school districts of Houston, New Orleans, Newark and New York City.
Developing School Leadership
Meaningful evaluations depend on strong school leaders. TNTP helps principals and assistant principals embrace their primary responsibility as instructional leaders – assessing instruction, delivering helpful feedback, and building effective teaching teams. With a clearer understanding of individual teachers’ strengths and weaknesses, school leaders can make informed decisions about teacher hiring and staffing, development, compensation, promotion and retention. Partners include districts and school networks in Colorado; Delaware; Kansas City, MO; Memphis; Newark; New York City; Providence; and Washington, DC.
Advancing Comprehensive Reform
Fundamental change in a district takes intense, coordinated effort on many fronts – from teacher recruitment and hiring, to evaluation and professional development, to compensation and retention. In select cases, TNTP develops long-term partnerships with districts deeply committed to achieving a single goal: effective teaching in every classroom. In these Foundations of Teacher Excellence projects, a substantial TNTP team works alongside district staff to implement reforms at every level across the district. Houston Independent School District is TNTP’s first Foundations partner.
